So today at camp, my site coordinator announced a sort of impromptu safety meeting. The point was to go over emergency procedures like fire drills but I really liked the way it started off, and I wanted to share. We gathered all the kids in the cafeteria and started talking about the poor behaviors, disrespect, and unsafe practices that had occurred over the first week. It was informal, and interactive so the students were able to discuss being safe and listening to teachers without being called out. SO instead of telling the same child "no don't do that", we were able to get the child's peers to talk about it instead. No one was called out. I really liked this because it was done in a way that made the kids think for themselves a little bit. I also saw some improvement afterwards, where some of the misbehaving children only needed to be told once to stop. So maybe this could be helpful at other sites. I don't know. But this was a highlight of my day and I wanted to share.

DeleteYesterday we had a movie party and I established a great connection with the behaving kids in my class. They were given treats, Popsicle etc.
